Claims and compensation workshop takes place in Sabah and Sarawak, Borneo

ITOPF delivered a joint capacity building workshop on claims and compensation for ship-source oil pollution delivered alongside the Malaysia Marine Department, Environment Protection Department Sabah, the Ministry of Environment and the International Group of P&I Clubs.

Across both locations in Sabah and Sarawak, participants took part in ITOPF's interactive table‑top exercise designed to walk through the full lifecycle of an oil spill, from the first notification and initial information gathering, through planning at‑sea and shoreline response operations, and concluding with the preparation and submission of compensation claims under the international conventions.

The first day of each workshop comprised talks covering legislation framework, response equipment, Malaysia’s Oil Spill Contingency Plan and coastal clean up. ITOPF is represented by David Campion, Khalish Ideris, and Joe Lane, who shared our expertise on the compensation conventions and how they can support nations in managing the response to an oil spill. We also shared the requirements for compensation claims to be admissible and approved, as well as reasonable response methods for oil spill clean up.

The International Group of P&I Club provided an overview of the IG’s role, an overview of P&I insurance coverage, and an in‑depth introduction to the relevant IMO Conventions.
