GI WACAF hosts Hazardous Noxious Substances workshop in Durban
2 December 2025
National authorities, response organisations and international experts came together in Durban, South Africa, to tackle one of the most complex challenges in marine safety: responding to hazardous and noxious substances (HNS) incidents.
Hosted by the GI WACAF Project in collaboration with South Africa's Department of Transport and South African Maritime Safety Authority, the National Workshop on HNS Contingency Planning marks a significant step forward for the region. South Africa’s leadership as the first African nation to ratify the 2010 HNS Convention sets the tone for progress in chemical spill readiness.
With global trade driving an increase in chemical cargoes at sea, robust preparedness and coordinated response are essential. ITOPF was proud to contribute expertise through Natalie Kirk and Franck Laruelle, supporting efforts to build capacity and strengthen environmental protection across Southern Africa.
