Key Partners

We work closely with a number of partners to complement our work in promoting effective preparedness and response to marine spills.

Intergovernment and Government Partners

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) and its regional centres (REMPEITCREMPEC) run courses on oil and HNS preparedness and response, which ITOPF routinely contributes to. We are also a visiting professor at the World Maritime University founded by the IMO.

The International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds (IOPC Funds) provide financial compensation for oil pollution damage that occurs in Member States resulting from spills of persistent oil from tankers. Where a shipowner is unknown we may provide technical advice to the IOPC Funds during a response, and assessment of the technical merit of potential claims. We also provide technical advice to the IOPC Funds when the shipowner is known, and it is a spill of persistent oil from a tanker in a Member State.

At the regional level we work with other intergovernmental agencies such as the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA). We have many informal partnerships with governments around the world and in addition we have Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that formalise our partnerships with the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the IMO, WMU and the Maritime and Ports Authority of Singapore (Singapore MPA).
