Response Arrangements
A national oil spill contingency plan has been developed. A committee on oil spill preparedness exists chaired by the Ministry of Transport, Direction of Merchant Navy. This is composed of members from other ministries, including the Ministries of Fisheries, Petroleum and Mines and Energy. (Information from WACAF, December 2009).
Response Policy
We are not aware of Mauritania’s response policy.
Equipment
Government & Private
WACAF reports that oil spill response equipment is stored at ports. We are not aware of any other government or privately owned specialised resources.
Previous Spill Experience
There do not appear to have been any major spills. The WORLD HITACHI ZOSEN (1992) collided with a bulker off Cape Blanc causing some 950 tons of oil to be spilt. A ship to ship transfer was carried out and no oil impacted the coastline.
