ITOPF runs pollution response workshop in Brazil

ITOPF was invited by IBAMA (Brazil's Ministry of the Environment) to run a training course for senior-level technical government personnel exploring the management of large-scale environmental incidents.
The course ran from 21-23 June and was hosted by the Directorate of Ports and Coasts (DPC), a department of the Brazilian Navy, with additional participants from Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA) and the National Petroleum Agency (ANP).
On the first two days of the workshop, Mark Whittington and Miguel Patel gave a series of presentations on different aspects of spill response, including a number of case studies. The final day involved a desk top exercise, which focused on decision making, strategy and the presentation of the response. There were plenty of questions and a high level of interaction from the 31 delegates.
The workshop provided ITOPF with an excellent opportunity to develop relationships with government personnel in Brazil and to support their initiatives to build the national capacity to deal with future pollution incidents.
