52nd GESAMP session takes place at UNESCO Paris
14 October 2025
UN agencies and scientific experts of GESAMP met to advance aspects of marine environmental protection at the 52nd GESAMP session at UNESCO Paris with ITOPF joining as observer and supporting the meeting with expert technical input.
ITOPF presented on its role in pollution response and the extent of its services, including collaboration opportunities with GESAMP’s work around Hazardous Noxious Substances (HNS), alternative fuels, plastic pellets and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG).
Further valuable discussions on the future of ocean pollution assessments and science-policy integration took place throughout the event.
ITOPF thanks Dr. Wendy Watson-Wright (GESAMP Chair), Chrysanthe Kolia (GESAMP Coordinator), and all participants for the in-depth scientific discussions. ITOPF continues its commitment to support the efforts made to address these complex marine environmental challenges.
Key takeaways:
📝 Progress on ballast water systems, chemical assessments & microplastics research.
📝 New focus areas: GESAMP is establishing a new Ocean Pollution Working Group to integrate plastics research with broader pollution assessment capabilities, ammonia fuel safety, ocean darkening, submarine discharges among other issues.
📝 Major regulatory milestones approaching (BBNJ treaty entering in force in 2026, Ballast Water Convention, biofouling framework).
