Helmut Sohmen, ex-ITOPF Chairman and Board Member

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Helmut Sohmen, ex-ITOPF Chairman.

Helmut served on the ITOPF Board for 20 years before accepting the position of Chairman, where he saw ITOPF’s services expand to non-tanker members, widening ITOPF’s response remit to substances other than oil, and was at the helm during the Prestige spill off the coast of Spain in 2002.

His tenure oversaw the modernisation of ITOPF, moving to a new office location in London and the introduction of ITOPF’s previous logo and branding.

His legacy goes far beyond the time he spent with ITOPF, and we celebrate his achievements throughout his life.
