MASEPOLREX25 takes place in Kenya with ITOPF delivering key sessions on claims and compensation
21 July 2025

ITOPF took part in MASEPOLREX25, this year’s regional marine pollution field training exercise for East Africa. Hosted by Kenya following the 2023 edition in Mauritius, the exercise was organised by the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) in collaboration with the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA), held in Mombasa.
The event brought together representatives from across the region, including South Africa, Mauritius, Somalia, Madagascar, Djibouti, and India, alongside technical partners such as JNCC, South African Maritime Safety Authority, Cefas, OSRL, and SMIT Salvage.
ITOPF supported the Incident Management Team and operations on site, including aerial surveillance and shoreline assessments. ITOPF delivered a dedicated session on claims and compensation, helping to strengthen national capacity in this area.
Kenya’s leadership and its clear willingness to test capabilities and adopt international best practices reflect the region’s growing commitment to effective spill preparedness and response. The lessons learned during MASEPOLREX25 are expected to further enhance regional collaboration and help protect the marine environment and the communities that depend on it.
